SYNOPSIS & DESCRIPTION
POLITICAL ANIMALS is an intergenerational conversation between Queer Australians. It’s a theatrical & historical exploration of the role of protests, parties, politics and the personal within the LGBTQIA+ community. Beginning with the creation of CAMP (Campaign Against Moral Persecution) & ending with Marriage Equality, PA is 50yrs in the making. Part history lesson, part political protest, part party, POLITICAL ANIMALS unveils the Australian fight for Queer rights & key moments – fabulous & fugly – along the way.
A MULTI-LAYERED, SOCIALLY-ENGAGED PERFORMANCE.
Combining non-actors – 78ers (who marched in the first Mardi Gras in 1978) & rainbow youth – performers & dancers, PA draws inspiration from verbatim materials (Hansard transcripts, photos, Queer & pop culture), elements of sound & movement to elevate this history into a dynamic performance.
Supported by a script that highlights chronological milestones from the Australian Queer movement, and interspersed with snippets of personal stories from those interviewed – this compelling performance will continuously contextualise history as human.
POLITICAL ANIMALS will acknowledge the importance of Australian Queer history during a once-in-a-lifetime moment. With all eyes on Sydney, POLICITAL ANIMALS will premiere at Sydney’s 2023 World Pride Festival. In so doing, it brings together scattered stories and lore which would otherwise be lost. POLICTICAL ANIMALS gifts audiences with a wholistic slice of significant Australian Queer history and a richer understanding of LGBTQIA+ identities and community.
